The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
On the 28th (Sun), get great views at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. Here are some ideas for day two: take in the views from Togetsukyo Bridge, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ryoanji Temple, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, then step into the grandiose world of Nijo-jo Castle, and finally contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple.

The country's first established capital, Nara houses some of the most storied buildings and natural attractions in Japan, with eight World Heritage Sites in total.
Kick off your visit on the 30th (Tue): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kofuku-ji Temple, see the interesting displays at Todaiji Temple Cultural Center, pause for some photo ops at Todai-ji Temple, then identify plant and animal life at Nara Park, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Nigatsu-do Temple, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Kasuga Grand Shrine.

Nara is just a short distance from Kyoto. In October, daily temperatures in Nara can reach 27°C, while at night they dip to 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 30th (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Kobe.

Start off your visit on the 31st (Wed): wander the streets of Kobe Harborland, then gain insight at Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution, then admire the verdant scenery at Arima Onsen, and finally take in panoramic vistas at Kobe City Hall (Observation Deck).
