Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Long House and The Anasazi Heritage Center. Step off the beaten path and head to Purgatory Resort and Petroglyph Point Hike. Change things up with a short trip to Million Dollar Highway in Silverton (about 30 minutes away). Next up on the itinerary: trek along Animas River Trail.
