The coastal city of Akita has gained a wider reputation for its Kanto Matsuri, or "pole lantern festival," where skilled performers balance long bamboo poles on their foreheads with glowing paper lanterns attached to the end.
Relax by the water at Oganishi Beach and Kisakata Beach. Step off the beaten path and head to Seitai Hoshikai and Gozanoishi Shrine. Change things up with these side-trips from Akita: Nikaho (Nakajimadai Shishigahana Marsh & Mototakifukuryusui), Nanohana Road (in Ogata-mura) and Onsen Resorts (in Kazuno). Next up on the itinerary: wander the streets of Samurai District, get engrossed in the history at Aoyagi Samurai Manor Museum, contemplate the long history of 16 Rakaniwa Rock, and get outside with Unosaki Beach.

If you are flying in from Australia, the closest major aiports are Sendai Airport, Niigata Airport and Hakodate Airport. In September in Akita, expect temperatures between 28°C during the day and 19°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 19th (Wed) early enough to travel back home.
