The coastal city of Akita has gained a wider reputation for its Kanto Matsuri, or "pole lantern festival," where skilled performers balance long bamboo poles on their foreheads with glowing paper lanterns attached to the end.
Get outdoors at Tazawako Ski Resort and Mt. Taiheizan Ski Area Opus. Visit Kaneko House and The Ruins of Akita Castle for their historical value. Venture out of the city with trips to Yokote (Yokote Masuda Manga Museum, Old Ishida Rikichi House, &more), Semboku (Kuromoriyama Observatory, Gozanoishi Shrine, &more) and Nikaho (Mototakifukuryusui, Nakajimadai Shishigahana Marsh, &more). There's lots more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Seitai Hoshikai, examine the collection at Akita Akarenga Kyodokan, kick back and relax at Oganishi Beach, and pause for some photo ops at Our Lady of Akita.

If you are flying in from Taiwan, the closest major aiports are Sendai Airport, Niigata Airport and Hakodate Airport. Expect a daytime high around °C in February, and nighttime lows around °C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 8th (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
