Just a few metro stops away from the bustle of Washington D.C., Alexandria provides a respite from the fast-paced capital.
Step off the beaten path and head to The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Stony Man Mountain Overlook. Change things up with these side-trips from Alexandria: R.H. Ballard Shop & Gallery (in Washington) and Dark Hollow Falls (in Shenandoah National Park). There's lots more to do: wander the streets of Old Town, stroll around Huntley Meadows Park, take an in-depth tour of Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Alexandria's Christ Church.
