Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Step out of Hobart to go to Brighton and see Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, which is approximately 30 minutes away. On the 3rd (Sun), give your taste buds a day to remember with a local gastronomic tour. There's lots more to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Wellington, appreciate the extensive heritage of Battery Point Sculpture Trail, explore the world behind art at Museum of Old and New Art (Mona), and steep yourself in history at Cascades Female Factory Historic Site.

Sydney to Hobart is an approximately 4.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train, ferry, and bus; or do a combination of bus and ferry. Expect a bit cooler temperatures when traveling from Sydney in January; daily highs in Hobart reach 26°C and lows reach 14°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 4th (Mon) early enough to go by car to Strahan.
