Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
On the 9th (Wed), stroll around City Park, browse the exhibits of Greenoaks Gallery, then look for all kinds of wild species at Cataract Gorge Reserve, and finally snap pictures at Alexandra Suspension Bridge. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: get a sense of history and politics at City of Launceston Town Hall, sample some tasty brews at Prestige Tours Tasmania, and then cruise the town with Hollybank Wilderness Adventures.

Adelaide to Launceston is an approximately 5.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of bus and ferry. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 0.5 hours traveling from Adelaide to Launceston. Traveling from Adelaide in December, things will get a bit cooler in Launceston: highs are around 25°C and lows about 10°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 10th (Thu) early enough to go by car to Port Arthur.

On the 11th (Fri), trek along Three Capes Track, take a memorable tour with Wild Ocean Tasmania, and then take in the dramatic natural features at Tessellated Pavement. Keep things going the next day: pause for some photo ops at Dog Line, get to know the fascinating history of Port Arthur Historic Site, and then don't miss a visit to Remarkable Cave.

Traveling by car from Launceston to Port Arthur takes 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or do a combination of flight and bus. In December in Port Arthur, expect temperatures between 24°C during the day and 13°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Sat) early enough to drive to Hobart.

Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Take a break from Hobart with a short trip to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton, about 30 minutes away. On the 14th (Mon), give your taste buds a day to remember with a local gastronomic tour.
