Santa Cruz

— 2 nights
Santa Cruz remains synonymous with surfing, but this counterculture bastion offers plenty even if you don't plan to catch any waves.
Attractions like Dolphin & Whale Watching and West Cliff Drive make great kid-friendly stops. There's lots more to do: get in on the family fun at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, tour the pleasant surroundings at Monarch Butterfly Natural Preserve, kick back and relax at Natural Bridges State Beach, and take an unorthodox tour of Mystery Spot.

For where to stay, reviews, maps, and more tourist information, go to the Santa Cruz route planning tool.

Sacramento to Santa Cruz is an approximately 2.5-hour car ride. You can also fly; or take a bus. When traveling from Sacramento in July, plan for much colder days in Santa Cruz, with highs around 73°F, while nights are little chillier with lows around 55°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Mon) so you can drive to Monterey.
