Centered around its castle, Kumamoto stands as a historic city with plenty of modern-day appeal to add to the mix.

A bustling port town noted as the site of two major battles in Japan's history, Shimonoseki also attracts gourmands as the world capital of the potentially poisonous pufferfish, or fugu--prepared only by licensed chefs and considered a delicacy.
On the 10th (Fri), visit Karato market, then admire nature's wide array of creatures at Kaikyokan, then snap pictures at Tsunoshimao Bridge, and finally tour the pleasant surroundings at Shimonoseki City Kawatana no Kusu no Mori.

Fukuoka

City of Yatai

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Start off your visit on the 11th (Sat): admire the landmark architecture of Hakata Station, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, take in the spiritual surroundings of Komyozen-ji Temple, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Dazaifu Tenman-gu, and finally walk around Higashihirao Park.
