7 days in Bogota & Villa de Leyva Itinerary

Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.

Step out of Bogota to go to Zipaquira and see Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira, which is approximately 54 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: see the interesting displays at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro), take in the awesome beauty at Monserrate, make a trip to Bolivar Square, and stroll around Parque Metropolitano Simon Bolivar.

Medellin to Bogota is an approximately 3.5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. While traveling from Medellin, expect slightly colder days and much colder nights in Bogota, ranging from highs of 23°C to lows of 7°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 12th (Sat) early enough to go by car to Villa de Leyva.

Positioned away from major trade routes and exploitable resources, the colonial town of Villa de Leyva has been largely left alone--leaving a window into the 16th century that has become one of Colombia's most popular attractions.

Venture out of the city with trips to Puente de Boyaca (in Boyaca) and Plaza de Bolivar (in Tunja). There's lots more to do: don't miss a visit to Hotel Plaza Mayor Villa de Leyva, examine the collection at Observatoire des indiens muiscas, identify plant and animal life at Granja de Avestruces, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Iglesia de Nuestra Senora del Rosario.

Traveling by car from Bogota to Villa de Leyva takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 15th (Tue) early enough to drive back home.
