The capital of the country's northernmost province, the city of Chuncheon acts a gateway to the wilder sights of the rural region.
Change things up with these side-trips from Chuncheon: Homyeong Lake (in Gapyeong-gun), Pocheon (Traditional Liquor Museum Sansawon & Bidulginang Waterfalls) and Inje-gun (Wondaeri Birch Forest & Baekdamsa Temple). A large coastal city, Gangneung has been historically separated from much of the country because of the long, stretching mountain range that runs parallel to the sea.

Busan

Cheongju
