Unvanquished City

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Porto: Monastery of Saint Peter of Cete (in Paredes), Citania de Sanfins (in Pacos de Ferreira) and Coimbra (Torre de Almedina, Jardim Botanico, &more). Dedicate the 17th (Sat) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. There's still lots to do: take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I, look for gifts at Livraria Lello, contemplate the waterfront views at Douro River, and get your bearings at Museu Serralves.
