Facing Mutsu Bay on the northernmost tip of Honshu, Aomori is a bustling regional capital known for its fresh seafood and modern architecture.
Take a break from the city and head to Oirase Mountain Stream and Manjufukashi. Popular historic sites such as Sannai-Maruyama Ruins and Komakino Ruins are in your itinerary. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Aomori: Senjyojiki Beach (in Fukaura-machi) and Tachineputa No Yakata (in Goshogawara). Tokyo to Aomori is an approximately 3.5-hour train ride. You can also fly; or drive. Prepare for slightly colder weather when traveling from Tokyo in August: high temperatures in Aomori hover around 78°F and lows are around 67°F. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Sat) to allow enough time to drive to Hakodate.

A gateway to the island, Hakodate has gained a reputation for its waterfront attractions, its proximity to some of the island's most popular natural sites, and its seafood.
Motomachi and Goryokaku Park will appeal to history buffs. Do some cultural sightseeing at The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward and Hakodate Magistrate's Office. There's still lots to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mount Hakodate, take in the spiritual surroundings of Trappistine Monasteries, take an in-depth tour of Hakodate Seikan Renrakusen Memorial Museum Mashumaru, and hunt for treasures at Hakodate Morning Market.

You can drive from Aomori to Hakodate in 5 hours. August in Hakodate sees daily highs of 76°F and lows of 68°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 10th (Mon) so you can travel to Sapporo.

A modern, bustling city known for its beer brewery, Sapporo attracts millions of visitors with its Snow Festival, during which elaborate ice and snow sculptures are exhibited all over town.
Get a sense of the local culture at Historical Village of Hokkaido (Kaitaku-no Mura) and Sapporo Clock Tower. Get outdoors at Asobeach Ishikari and Jigokudani. Get out of town with these interesting Sapporo side-trips: Otaru (Shioya Beach, The Site of Temiya Line, & more), Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery (in Yoichi-cho) and Noboribetsu (Oyunumagawa Natural Footbath & Lake Fujin). On the 30th (Sun), spend an exhilarating day on the slopes at Niseko Mountain Resort Grand Hirafu Ski Place. There's still lots to do: head outdoors with Denshin Beach, see the interesting displays at Sapporo Beer Museum, walk around Moerenuma Park, and take in the dramatic scenery at Chidorigataki Falls.

You can do a combination of shuttle and flight from Hakodate to Sapporo in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. Expect a daytime high around 74°F in August, and nighttime lows around 71°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 31st (Mon) to allow time for travel to Hiroshima.

In August, Hiroshima is a bit warmer than Sapporo - with highs of 88°F and lows of 77°F. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 5th (Sat) to allow enough time to take a train to Kyoto.
