The Isle of Thanet features a long coastline and a string of beachside resorts that retain much of their Victorian appeal, yet boldly step into the 21st century with their modern, cosmopolitan flavor. The isle, once separated from the mainland by the nearly 600 m (2,000 ft) wide River Wantsum, is no longer a true island. A high-speed rail link connects the isle to London, making its numerous secluded bays and sun-warmed beaches easily accessible. During the height of the season, the beaches are packed with Londoners seeking a much-needed respite from the big city. If you venture deeper inland, though, you can always find a quiet spot to picnic, relax, and enjoy the wildlife.
