Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.

Fly from Kirkwall to Inverness in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and ferry; or do a combination of bus, ferry, taxi, and train. In September in Inverness, expect temperatures between 62°F during the day and 46°F at night. On the 29th (Tue), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.
