Paris of the North

Often referred to as "The Paris of the North," Riga offers thriving nightlife and some of the best collections of Art Nouveau architecture in Europe.
When in Riga, make a side trip to see Salaspils Memorial Ensemble in Salaspils, approximately Salaspils away. There's lots more to do: wander the streets of Old City Riga (Vecriga), admire the striking features of Alberta Iela, take an in-depth tour of Latvijas Okupācijas muzejs, and hunt for treasures at Central Market (Centraltirgus).

To see maps, more things to do, other places to visit, and other tourist information, read our Riga trip site.

In May, daytime highs in Riga are 20°C, while nighttime lows are 9°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 21st (Sat) to allow time to travel back home.

Riga Region forms the central part of Latvia, with the nation's capital at its heart. Half of the country's population lives in the area, with a large concentration in the city of Riga, the largest city in the Baltics. Founded in 1201, the capital earned World Heritage Status for its Art Nouveau architecture and 19th-century wooden buildings. Riga's skyline is dominated by church spires peeking above historical buildings. Explore the region more deeply by visiting the countryside and lesser-known towns like Limbazi, Tukums, Ogre, Jurmala, and Sigulda. As a transport hub of the country, this region links easily to others to continue your holiday in Latvia.
