The Heart of Tasmania

Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Launceston: Beauty Point (Platypus House & Seahorse World), Low Head Penguin Tours (in Low Head) and Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre (in Beaconsfield). Dedicate the 12th (Mon) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. There's still lots to do: walk around City Park, admire the masterpieces at Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery, try to win big at Country Club Tasmania Casino, and see the interesting displays at National Automobile Museum of Tasmania.

For ratings, traveler tips, more things to do, and more tourist information, you can read our Launceston day trip planner.

In July, plan for daily highs up to 13°C, and evening lows to 2°C.
