The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.

If you are flying in from Malaysia, the closest major aiport is Fukuoka Airport. In December in Fukuoka, expect temperatures between 13°C during the day and 5°C at night. On the 18th (Wed), you're off to Yufu.

Yufu

Beppu

Traveling by car from Yufu to Beppu takes an hour. Alternatively, you can take a train. December in Beppu sees daily highs of 13°C and lows of 6°C at night. On the 20th (Fri), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can take a train to Kumamoto.

Kumamoto

Centered around its castle, Kumamoto stands as a historic city with plenty of modern-day appeal to add to the mix.
Start off your visit on the 20th (Fri): step into the grandiose world of Kumamoto Castle and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kato Shrine.

Take a train from Beppu to Kumamoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Beppu in December, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be slightly colder in Kumamoto, with lows of 3°C. You'll have a few hours on the 21st (Sat) to wrap things up before traveling to Fukuoka.

City of Yatai

You've now added Tochoji Temple to your itinerary. Kick off your visit on the 21st (Sat): take in the spiritual surroundings of Tochoji Temple, make a trip to Yatai, head off the coast to Nokonoshima Island, take in panoramic vistas at Fukuoka Tower, then go for a walk through Ohori Park, and finally contemplate the long history of Fukuoka Castle Ruins. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: browse the different shops at JR Hakata City Amu Plaza Hakata, enjoy breathtaking views from Komenoyama Obsevatory, then take in nature's colorful creations at Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, and finally stop by Shimamoto Mentaiko Hakata Ekimae.
