The city of Kirishima, established in 2005 by the merging of several smaller towns, makes a popular base for exploring the volcanic mountain range of the surrounding national park.
Get out of town with these interesting Kirishima side-trips: Nichinan (Obi, Nichinan Coast, &more), Takachiho Ranch (in Miyakonojo) and Miyazaki (Onino Sentakuita, Aoshima Island, &more). The adventure continues: don't miss a visit to Kareigawa Station, examine the collection at Sora Stage, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Aoiaso Shrine, and take in the dramatic scenery at Maruo Falls.

If you are flying in from Australia, the closest major aiport is Kagoshima Airport. In March, daytime highs in Kirishima are 17°C, while nighttime lows are 5°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 5th (Sun) early enough to travel back home.
