City of a Hundred Steeples

Caen is known for its historical buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who was buried there, and for the Battle for Caen--heavy fighting that took place in and around Caen during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, destroying much of the city.
Attractions like Falaises d'Etretat and Omaha Beach make great kid-friendly stops. Get out of town with these interesting Caen side-trips: Le Vieux Pont de Ducey (in Ducey), Mont Saint-Michel (in Mont-Saint-Michel) and Abeille Parachutisme (in Le Havre). There's still lots to do: learn about all things military at Memorial de Caen, admire the natural beauty at La Colline aux Oiseaux, admire the masterpieces at Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, and make a trip to Chemin des Douaniers.

If you are flying in from The Netherlands, the closest major aiports are Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport, Rennes-Saint-Jacques Airport and Deauville-Saint-Gatien Airport. In July, daytime highs in Caen are 26°C, while nighttime lows are 15°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 23rd (Thu) early enough to travel back home.
