Caen is known for its historical buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who was buried there, and for the Battle for Caen--heavy fighting that took place in and around Caen during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, destroying much of the city.
Attractions like Falaises d'Etretat and Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux make great kid-friendly stops. Get out of town with these interesting Caen side-trips: Mont Saint-Michel (in Mont-Saint-Michel), Abeille Parachutisme (in Le Havre) and Le Vieux Pont de Ducey (in Ducey). There's much more to do: explore the different monuments and memorials at Normandy American Cemetery, take in the spiritual surroundings of Cathedrale Notre-Dame, make a trip to Chemin des Douaniers, and get in on the family fun at Festyland Parc.

If you are flying in from The Netherlands, the closest major aiports are Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport, Rennes-Saint-Jacques Airport and Deauville-Saint-Gatien Airport. In July, plan for daily highs up to 26°C, and evening lows to 15°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 23rd (Thu) so you can travel back home.
