Built on seven hills, Lisbon has experienced a renaissance in recent years, making it the cultural star of Portugal.
Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Museu Colecao Berardo will appeal to museum buffs. Get some cultural insight at Belém Tower and Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Museum-lovers will appreciate O Navio Gil Eannes and Casa do Infante. Visit Centro Historico de Guimaraes and Capela das Almas for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Porto: Guimaraes (Igreja de S. Damaso, Muralhas de Guimaraes, &more), Braga (Jardim de Santa Barbara, Se de Braga, &more) and Monastery of the Saviour of Travanca (in Travanca).
