Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Ozegahara and Takinoo Shrine. Change things up with these side-trips from Nikko: Fukuroda Falls (in Daigo-machi), Kairakuen Park (in Mito) and Ikaho Stone Steps (in Shibukawa). On the 6th (Sat), spend a day of thorough relaxation at some of the top local onsens. Tokyo to Nikko is an approximately 2-hour train ride. You can also drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Tokyo in October, plan for a bit cooler days in Nikko, with highs around 67°F, while nights are about the same with lows around 62°F. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 6th (Sat) so you can travel to Sado.
