Wakayama

— 57 nights
Split into two parts by the Kinokawa River, the city of Wakayama stands nestled in the eponymous plain, overlooked by a historic hilltop castle that was rebuilt after World War II. On a tour of Wakayama, you'll have the chance to take day trips to the prefecture's numerous natural and historic sights, as the town has good connections and also provides easy access to Osaka and Nara.
Get out of town with these interesting Wakayama side-trips: Tokushima (Raifuku-ji Temple, Jinmu Emperor Statue, &more), Koya-cho (Kongobu-ji Temple, Kobori Nangakudo, &more) and Izumisano (Kanku Observation Hall Sky View, Rekishikan Izumisano, &more). There's lots more to do: explore the historical opulence of Wakayama Castle, step off the mainland to explore Tomogashima Island, take in the spiritual surroundings of Tamaki Shrine, and hunt for treasures at Kuroshio Market.

To find traveler tips, maps, reviews, and tourist information, read Wakayama day trip planning site.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiports are Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport and Takamatsu Airport. In February in Wakayama, expect temperatures between 48°F during the day and 39°F at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Thu) so you can travel back home.
