Ulan-Ude

Ulan-Ude is the capital city of the Republic of Buryatia, Russia; it is located about 100km southeast of Lake Baikal on the Uda River at its confluence with the Selenga. Step out of Ulan-Ude to go to Ivolginsk and see Ivolginsk Datsan (Buddhist Monastery), which is approximately 46 minutes away. There's much more to do: admire the striking features of Datsan Rinpoche Bagsha, pause for some serene contemplation at Church of the Ascension, admire the local landmark of Music Fountain, and see the interesting displays at Zabaykalye Peoples Ethnography Museum.

Fly from St. Petersburg to Ulan-Ude in 10 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a train. The time zone changes from Moscow Standard Time to Irkutsk Standard Time, which is usually a 5 hour difference. Traveling from St. Petersburg in June, expect nights in Ulan-Ude to be about the same, around 12°C, while days are a bit warmer, around 29°C.
