Kaohsiung

Harbor City

A small trading town in the 17th century, Kaohsiung now stands as a sprawling metropolis, its harbor representing the largest on the island.
Kick off your visit on the 25th (Wed): step off the mainland to explore Cijin Island, view the masterpieces at The Pier-2 Art Centre, then don't miss a visit to The Dome of Light, and finally steep yourself in history at Formosa Boulevard Station. On your second day here, head outdoors with Ai He (Love River), make a trip to Dragon Tiger Tower, then savor the flavors at Freedom Sunset Market, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum.

Getting from Hualien to Kaohsiung by car takes about 5 hours. Other options: take a train. December in Kaohsiung sees daily highs of 29°C and lows of 20°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 27th (Fri) to allow time for the train ride to Tainan.

Tainan

The oldest city in the country, Tainan stood as the island's capital during feudal times.
Kick off your visit on the 27th (Fri): see the interesting displays at Chimei Museum.
