Caen is known for its historical buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who was buried there, and for the Battle for Caen--heavy fighting that took place in and around Caen during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, destroying much of the city.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Eglise Paroissiale Saint-Pierre and Abbaye aux Hommes. Escape the urban bustle at Plage de Trouville and Omaha Beach. Change things up with these side-trips from Caen: Colleville-sur-Mer (Overlord Museum - Omaha Beach & American Cemetery & Memorial), Cimetiere militaire Britannique de Bazenville (in Bazenville) and Deauville Beach (in Deauville).
