Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Explore Porto's surroundings by going to Coimbra (Misericordia de Coimbra Museum, University of Coimbra, &more). There's still lots to do: take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I, look for gifts at Livraria Lello, get into the urban bustle at Palacio da Bolsa, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral).

If you are flying in from Portugal, the closest major aiport is Francisco de Sá Carneiro Airport. In May in Porto, expect temperatures between 23°C during the day and 13°C at night. On the 21st (Thu), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Fira.

Fira, the busy capital of Santorini, sits on the very edge of a volcanic caldera.
Get out of town with these interesting Fira side-trips: Oia (Mnemossyne Gallery, Naval Maritime Museum, &more) and Perivolos (in Perivolos). There's lots more to do: explore the ancient world of Akrotiri, trek along Ekklisia Theoskepasti hiking trail, explore the activities along Amoudi Bay, and steep yourself in history at Ancient Thera.

You'll lose 2 hours traveling from Porto to Fira due to the time zone difference. Traveling from Porto in May, things will get a bit warmer in Fira: highs are around 28°C and lows about 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 27th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel to Tokyo.
