Cartagena
— 49 nights

City of Heroes
The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.Visiting Playa Blanca and Volcan de Lodo El Totumo (Mud Volcano) will get you outdoors. Get out of town with these interesting Cartagena side-trips: Monumento a Benkos Bioho (in San Basilio De Palenque), Club Playa Guacamaya (in La Boquilla) and Aviario Nacional de Colombia (in Isla Baru). Spend the 2nd (Sat) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. On the 9th (Sat), spend a thrilling day on the water with a speed boat tour. There's lots more to do: explore the historical opulence of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, contemplate the long history of Torre del Reloj, take an in-depth tour of Museo del Oro Zenu, and pause for some serene contemplation at Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver.
