5 days in Trikala & Kalambaka Itinerary

Trikala is a city in northwestern Thessaly, Greece, and the capital of the Trikala regional unit. Kick off your visit on the 15th (Mon): wander the streets of Old City of Trikala and then snap pictures at Lithaios Central Bridge.

Athens to Trikala is an approximately 4.5-hour car ride. Traveling from Athens in June, plan for a bit cooler nights in Trikala, with lows around 19°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 15th (Mon) so you can drive to Kalambaka.

The gateway to one of the largest monastery complexes in Greece, the small town of Kalambaka nestles against a landscape of imposing rock formations rising 400 m (1,300 ft) into the air. Nearly leveled during World War II, the town rebuilt and reinvented itself in the post-war period, quickly becoming one of the region's major travel destinations.

Explore Kalambaka's surroundings by going to Ioannina (Alpine Zone, Kehila Kedosha Yashan Synagogue, &more) and Vrellis Greek History Museum (in Bizani). And it doesn't end there: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Meteora, steep yourself in history at Varlaam Monastery, pause for some serene contemplation at Byzantine Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, and examine the collection at Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum.

Kalambaka is very close to Trikala. When traveling from Trikala in June, plan for slightly colder days and about the same nights in Kalambaka: temperatures range from 32°C by day to 17°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Fri) so you can drive back home.
