Set amid quintessentially Japanese landscape, Shirakawa-mura consists of 16 quaint villages, including a historic village of farm houses, now designated a World Heritage Site.
Start off your visit on the 25th (Fri): enjoy breathtaking views from Tenshukakau Observatory, take some stellar pictures from Ogimachi Castle Old Site Observatory, then steep yourself in history at Nagase house, then contemplate the long history of Wada House, and finally appreciate the extensive heritage of The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses. On the 26th (Sat), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: contemplate the long history of Kanda house, get engrossed in the history at Shirakawago Gassho Zukuri Minkaen, then take in the views from Deai Bridge, and finally steep yourself in history at Shirakawago.

Tokyo to Shirakawa-mura is an approximately 5-hour combination of train and car. You can also drive; or fly. When traveling from Tokyo in December, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Shirakawa-mura: temperatures range from 49°F by day to 37°F at night. On the 27th (Sun), you'll have the morning to explore before heading off to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
On the 27th (Sun), don't miss a visit to Nijo Castle and then contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 28th (Mon): take in the spiritual surroundings of Kinkaku-ji and then wander the streets of Arashiyama.
