Ponta Delgada

As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Step off the beaten path and head to Jardim Antonio Borges and Lagoa do Canario. Visiting Mosteiros Beach and Pinhal da Paz will get you outdoors. Take a break from Ponta Delgada with a short trip to Piscinas Naturais in Mosteiros, about 38 minutes away. There's more to do: get great views at Boca do Inferno Viewpoint.

For ratings, other places to visit, photos, and other tourist information, you can read our Ponta Delgada trip itinerary website.

Green Island
Known as The Green Island, Sao Miguel is the largest of the nine islands of Azores and is considered a natural paradise. These islands were discovered in the 15th century and, according to myth, are reputed to be part of the lost empire of Atlantis. Sao Miguel's most prominent feature is a set of twin lakes, one of which is blue and the other green. Visitors also enjoy the island's park, golf courses, beaches, mountains, marina, and ocean views. Stop for a look at the city's monuments and architecture, and experience the cobbled streets lined with a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and cafes.
