Matera

— 4 nights

Subterranean City

Famous for its resemblance to the ancient settlements of Jerusalem and Cappadocia, Matera remains one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
Visiting Master Wave and Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario will get you outdoors. Step off the beaten path and head to I Pastini and Chiesa del Purgatorio. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Matera: Gravina in Puglia (Gravina in Puglia - Cattedrale & Laboratorio della Cola Cola - La Casa della Cola Cola), Rione Aia Piccola (in Alberobello) and Martina Franca (L'Acropoli di Puglia & Chiesa di Sant'Antonio dei Cappuccini). And it doesn't end there: explore the world behind art at MUDIMA - Museo Diocesano Matronei Altamura, don't miss a visit to Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi, see the interesting displays at MOOM Matera Olive Oil Museum, and look for all kinds of wild species at Wildlife Areas.

For other places to visit, photos, more things to do, and more tourist information, refer to the Matera trip planner.

In June, daytime highs in Matera are 32°C, while nighttime lows are 19°C.
