Funchal
— 4 nights
The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.Step out of the city life by going to Safari Madeira Island and Valley of the Nuns. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to 25 Fontes Falls and Miradouro Pico Dos Barcelos. Go for a jaunt from Funchal to Calheta to see Swim with Dolphins about 34 minutes away. There's still lots to do: see the sights as you ascend with a climbing tour, head outdoors with Outdoor Activities, learn more about the world around you at Monte Palace Museum, and take in nature's colorful creations at Monte Palace Madeira.

Pearl of the Atlantic
Madeira, the largest island of the eponymous archipelago, serves as one of Portugal's top year-round holiday destinations. Although it draws a growing number of visitors, the island retains much of its relaxed atmosphere and provides an alternative vacation idea for travelers seeking a tropical paradise still relatively unspoiled by mass tourism. The capital city of Funchal, settled in the 15th century, attracts the biggest crowds and serves as a convenient stopover for trans-Atlantic cruise ships sailing from the Caribbean. When you get tired of exploring Fuchal's lively streets and beaches, hop on a boat tour of the archipelago for some whale watching or big game fishing.
