Windermere

— 4 nights
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. Kids will appreciate attractions like Lake Windermere and Orrest Head. Change things up with these side-trips from Windermere: Bowness-on-Windermere (Boat Tours & Water Sports & The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction), The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop (in Grasmere) and South Lakes Safari Zoo (in Lindal-in-Furness). Next up on the itinerary: skim along the rocks with a canyoning and rapelling tour, see the interesting displays at Hill Top, Beatrix Potter's House, have some family-friendly fun at Cliffhanger Rooms, and look for all kinds of wild species at Brockhole on Windermere.

To see traveler tips and tourist information, use the Windermere trip itinerary website.

Dumfries to Windermere is an approximately 2.5-hour car ride. You can also drive. Cap off your sightseeing on the 16th (Fri) early enough to go by car back home.

A paradise for all lovers of the great outdoors, UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lake District is widely regarded as one of the most stunning areas of natural beauty in the UK. This mountainous region famously served as inspiration for some of the finest works of artists William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Containing the country’s largest national park, the Lake District is England’s top vacation destination for hikers and rock climbers. Nature lovers from around the world linger in this area for days and even weeks, sightseeing in the sweeping landscape of rugged hilltops, glistening lakes, dense forests, and hazy mountaintops. The region abounds in numerous hidden pubs, inns, and hotels, offering not only shelter from the weather, but also first-class dining and drinking options.
