The River Meuse runs through Verdun forming several canals throughout the valley, surrounded by hills with historical fortresses, battlefields, and underground barracks, as well as a healthy beer brewing culture.
Kick off your visit on the 31st (Thu): stroll the grounds of Cimetiere Militaire du Faubourg-Pave and then admire the landmark architecture of Cathedrale Notre Dame de Verdun.

Located at the confluence of the Moselle and the Seille rivers bordering Luxembourg and Germany, Metz has a cultural confluence as well with a merging of its French and German heritage and military traditions.
On the 1st (Fri), make a trip to Eglise Saint-Maximin, get to know the fascinating history of Place de la Comedie, pause for some serene contemplation at Le Temple Neuf, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Eglise de Sillegny, then contemplate the long history of Group Fortifications of Aisne, and finally get engrossed in the history at Fort de Queuleu. Traveling from Verdun in November, expect nights in Metz to be about the same, around 3°C, while days are little chillier, around 10°C. You can take a train from Metz to Nancy in an hour. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. In November, plan for daily highs up to 11°C, and evening lows to 4°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Mon) to allow enough time to drive back home.
