Founded in 1816 by Uruguayan national hero Jose Gervasio Artigas, Carmelo houses a population of under 20,000, though plenty more come here to enjoy holidays on the banks of the Arroyo de las Vacas River.
Escape the urban bustle at Represa de Palmar and Canteras del Cerro. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Carmelo: Rambla de Mercedes (in Mercedes), Playa de la Agraciada (in Nueva Palmira) and Arbol Timbo (in Villa Soriano). Tacuarembo

Established by presidential decree in 1831, Tacuarembo grew over time into the capital of its eponymous department, largely because of its agricultural industry fed by the Tacuarembo river that flows through the northern part of town.
Visiting Pozo Hondo and Valle del Lunarejo will get you outdoors. There's still lots to do: stroll through Gruta de los Helechos, see the interesting displays at Museu FordT City, and soothe aching muscles at Balneario Ipora.
