Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Toji and Mii-dera Temple (Onjo-ji Temple). Head to Dotonbori and Asahiyakifor some retail therapy. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Ise Shrine Geku (in Ise), Kofuku-ji Temple (in Nara) and Himeji Castle (in Himeji).
