The Birthplace of Democracy

One of the world's most ancient cities, Athens remains Europe's undisputed historical and cultural capital.
Shop till you drop at T'Anapliotiko Bakaliko and Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. Get out of town with these interesting Athens side-trips: Lion Gate (in Mycenae), St. Luke Archibishop (in Lefkakia) and Nafplio (Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation, Bourtzi, &more). There's lots more to do: get engrossed in the history at Acropolis Museum, browse the different shops at River West, examine the collection at Museum 'Atelier Spyros Vassiliou', and admire the masterpieces at Benaki Museum.

Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Do your shopping at Via Condotti and Antica Frutteria delle Coppelle. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Rome: Castello Orsini (in Celleno), La Bottega degli Orsini (in Mugnano in Teverina) and Museo Palazzo Doebbing (in Sutri). There's still lots to do: steep yourself in history at St. Peter's Basilica, delve into the distant past at Pantheon, make a trip to Spanish Steps, and admire the local landmark of Trevi Fountain.
