Porto

— 20 nights

Unvanquished City

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Venture out of the city with trips to Igreja Paroquial de Ovar (in Ovar), Coimbra (Praca Oito de Maio, Igreja e Mosteiro da Santa Cruz, &more) and Viseu (Casa Do Miradouro & Se Catedral de Viseu). There's much more to do: snap pictures at Ponte de Dom Luis I, get the lay of the land with Walking tours, explore the world behind art at Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, and take a stroll around Palacio da Bolsa.

Lisbon District travel guide

4.4
Landmarks · Castles · Aquariums
Lisbon District contains a coastline that stretches for over 320 km (200 mi), so it shouldn't come as a surprise that the region's art, cuisine, and architecture remain inextricably linked to the sea. Straddling seven hills on the edge of the Atlantic, the coastal city of Lisbon serves as the district's main holiday destination, drawing pleasure seekers with its old-fashioned hospitality, rich cultural scene, and vibrant nightlife. Further inland spreads the district's serene countryside, studded with quaint villages, monasteries, and wineries. The small town of Sintra, a standout among the district's notable places to visit, boasts a well-preserved Moorish castle and a lavish royal palace and gardens, former summer residence of Portuguese aristocrats.
