Colombo

— 3 nights
The commercial capital of the country, Colombo has added modern touches to its colonial-era core, creating an exciting and eclectic coastal city.
Family-friendly places like Safaris and Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple will thrill your kids. Venture out of the city with trips to Negombo (Adrenaline & Extreme Tours, Negombo Beach, &more) and Kalutara (Dolphin & Whale Watching & Kalutara Beach). The adventure continues: walk around Galle Face Green, don't miss a visit to Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, appreciate the history behind Independence Memorial Hall, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Borella All Saints Church.

For traveler tips, where to stay, and other tourist information, read our Colombo trip planner.

The most densely populated province in Sri Lanka, Western Province abounds with rich cultural heritage. Attractions in Western Province include serene Buddhist temples built on lake islands, Gothic-style Catholic churches, and numerous darghas. Facing the Laccadive Sea and enjoying a gentle tropical climate, the province offers a number of pristine beaches with yellow sand and palm trees. Nature and wildlife tours offer the opportunity to see rare animals, such as spotted leopards and baby elephants in a nursery, with plenty more wildlife waiting to be discovered. Strategically located and the former home of ancient kingdoms, as well as Portuguese, Dutch, and British occupation, the area's many ancient forts offer another reason to visit Western Province.
