The mountainous landscape of County Down has managed to remain largely untouched despite a great deal of urban development over the last few years. The county’s famous Mourne Mountains, which dominate its countryside of lush fields and fertile farms, offer some of the best hillside hiking trails in this part of the world. The county features more than a rich landscape: This affluent area is dotted with luxurious private mansions, top-notch golf courses, and expensive restaurants. Easily reached from the capital, the usually tranquil Down comes to life on the weekends, when the city dwellers arrive to explore the county’s numerous antique shops and fresh seafood eateries.
