With the largest international airport on the island, Chitose serves for most visitors as a way in or a way out, rather than a destination in itself.
Get some cultural insight at Royce' Chocolate World and Sky Museum, New Chitose Airport. Your inner history buff will appreciate Nakajima Shrine and Chitose Shrine. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Chitose: Yoshitsune Shrine (in Biratori-cho), Noboribetsu (Jigokudani, Oku no Yu, & more) and Itanki Beach (in Muroran). There's still lots to do: soak in some Japanese tradition at some of the top local onsens, explore the activities along Lake Shikotsu, examine the collection at Steiff Nature World, and take in panoramic vistas at Tomakomai City Midorigaoka Park Observation Deck.

For other places to visit, maps, where to stay, and more tourist information, use the Chitose road trip planning site .

If you are flying in from Palau, the closest major airports are New Chitose Airport, Asahikawa Airport and Hakodate Airport. Expect a daytime high around 27°C in July, and nighttime lows around 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
