The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.

Step out of Cartagena with an excursion to Playa Blanca in Isla Baru--about 1h 5 min away. There's lots more to do: make a trip to Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, see the interesting displays at Caribe Jewelry Museum & Factory, contemplate the long history of Sanctuary of Saint Peter Claver, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa.
