Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.

Head to Parque 93 and Centro Comercial Gran Estacionfor some retail therapy. Your inner history buff will appreciate Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira and Bolivar Square. Get out of town with these interesting Bogota side-trips: Laguna de Guatavita (in Tierra Negra) and Parque Natural Chicaque (in Chicaque).
