A gateway to a sprawling and diverse national park, a center of Shinto spiritualism and place of Buddhist worship, an emblem of the riches and dominance of the Tokugawa shogunate: Nikko means many things to many people.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Ryuzu Waterfall and Nikko National Park. Get outdoors at Yudaki Falls and Nasu Nature Study Paths. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Nikko: Nasu-machi (Fujishiro Seiji Museum, Mt. Nasu, &more). Tucked away among the foothills of the Hakkoda mountain range, Towada tourism revolves around its eponymous lake and the surrounding national park.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Oirase Mountain Stream and Oirase River. Get outdoors at Hakkoda Mountains and Guriland. Step out of Towada to go to Aomori and see Tashirotai Heights, which is approximately 54 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: admire the sheer force of Choshi Otaki Waterfall, explore the activities along Lake Towada, admire the masterpieces at Towada Art Center, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Towada Shrine.
