More than just a convenient resting place for travelers on their way to the national park encompassing the Front Range of the Rockies, Estes Park is a popular place to visit in its own right.
Get a sense of the local culture at Images of Rocky Mountain National Park and The Studio Fine Art and Framing. Visiting Horsetooth Mountain Open Space and Cache La Poudre Wilderness will get you outdoors. Step out of Estes Park with an excursion to Abbey of St. Walburga in Virginia Dale--about 1h 35 min away. There's still lots to do: shop like a local with Mountain Blown Glass, explore the striking landscape of Sheep Lakes, look for gifts at Brownfield's, and view the masterpieces at Art Center of Estes Park Gallery.

Whereas most national parks are primarily devoted to showcasing unique and special landscapes, Mesa Verde National Park focuses on ancient human habitation.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Spruce Tree House and Square Tower House. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Petroglyph Point Hike and Far View Sites. Originally a frontier mining town, Durango is known today for its scenic setting, outdoor activities, and the 1880s steam-powered railway that takes visitors through sections of the mountains where roads don't reach.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Animas River Trail and The Anasazi Heritage Center. For shopping fun, head to Route 550 Gifts or Artisans of Mancos. Next up on the itinerary: stroll through The Colorado Trail, get a taste of the local shopping with Scenic Aperture Gallery, have fun at Durango Community Recreation Center, and fly down the slopes at Purgatory Resort.

Escape the urban bustle at Arapahoe Basin and Frisco Adventure Park. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Loveland Ski Area and Ski Cooper. Change things up with a short trip to Rock Hut in Leadville (about 54 minutes away). There's lots more to do: take in the awesome beauty at Peak 9, indulge your thirst for a good beer at Broken Compass Brewery & Tap House, fly down the slopes at Copper Mountain, and get all the information you need at Breckenridge Welcome Center.
