The largest city on the Mississippi River, Memphis bills itself as both the "Birthplace of Rock" and "Home of the Blues." With such a rich musical heritage, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Elvis Presley chose to live in Memphis during his later years.
Take a break from the city and head to Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge and Thacker Mountain Rail Trail. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Metal Museum and Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum. The center of Cherokee culture in the eastern part of the country, the town named after this Native American tribe serves as a base camp for hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains.
