Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Piazza San Marco and Doge's Palace will appeal to history buffs. Basilica di San Marco and Basilica di Aquileia are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Explore Venice's surroundings by going to Castello Estense (in Ferrara), Castello di Miramare - Museo Storico (in Trieste) and Padua (Scrovegni Chapel & Basilica di Sant’Antonio). There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, snap pictures at Ponte dei Sospiri, contemplate the waterfront views at Canal Grande, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute.
