The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Escape the urban bustle at Amanohashidate and Metasequoia Namiki. Museum-lovers will appreciate Kyoto Railway Museum and Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design. Change things up with a short trip to Kaizu Osaki in Takashima (about 1h 15 min away).
